Such diets were actually introduced during the seventies, if one goes down memory lane. Though not very successful in those days, they have proved very successful in modern times–so much so, that these diets constitute a separate industry of their own! What was so special about the seventies for these diets to come into existence? Well, America had recovered from its depression days and the economy was thriving! The standard of living for most Americans went higher, and it could only go much higher from then onwards. The happy results were evident in protruding bellies! Image-conscious Americans were not happy with this development. Seeking a solution, they came up with weight loss diets. But these diets were charted out within the home premises, most of them only suggesting avoidance of particular foodstuffs. No thought was given to what type of food was to be actually consumed. Thus, these weight loss diets did not really amount to much in those times.
You must remember that this was an age when food, diets and nutrition had still to become key areas with qualified professionals offering advice. Typically, it was the lady of the house who was supposed to keep a check on the bulge around her man’s midriff and she did this by doing away with or slowly but steadily eliminating known weight gaining foods. Nutrition and balanced weight loss diets were still unknown as yet.
If the seventies were rather backward were these diets were concerned, the early eighties took dieters many steps forward. Many institutions took up weight loss diets seriously. Not only did they advise people about consumption and avoidance, but also set up counters to judge calories, conducted analyses of body fat and advised having lean muscles. There was the emergence of all sorts of fads where diets were concerned. Some promoted the consumption of purely vegetarian food to keep weight in control; others were quite vocal about extra consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. Some diets simply charted out all the foodstuffs that would lead to excess weight gain and advised that they should not be part of the daily diet! The Atkins diet stressed that carbohydrates and starchy foods were to be avoided, but that meat could be eaten. The “American bellies were so prominent that they caught the attention of qualified health professionals and governmental institutions. Additionally, health surveys had indicated that every fourth American was clinically obese. This paved the way for the setting up of diet clinics by health practitioners and advocating of weight loss diets.
Like most others, I have also found myself battling with a bulging belly! And just like other people, weight control diets have been a regular part of my life for quite some time. What I discovered from these experiences is that no matter how good the diet is, it all comes to nought without regular exercise. It is not advisable to starve oneself just to avoid weight gain. Along with weight, you also lose strength and vitality. An effective weight control diet along with proper and regular exercise will definitely bring drastic changes in your body, and leave behind a healthier you!
